چکیده

tonometry. Biomicroscopic examination of macula in both the eyes showed bilateral clinically significant macular oedema. He underwent digital fundus fluorescein angiography (Figure 1). Based on FFA he received bilateral perifoveal laser photocoagulation on 1 December 2004. He was reviewed 3 months following laser photocoagulation when his visual acuity was stable at 6/12 N6 in right eye and 6/36 N12 in the left eye. Optical Coherence Tomography of the left eye showed persistent macular edema with cystoid changes. A 63 year old gentleman with history of diabetes mellitus of 10 years duration presented to us with defective vision in both eyes of 6 months duration on November 23 2004.There was no previous treatment history of diabetic retinopathy, no history of associated hypertension or ischaemic heart disease. Metabolic control of diabetes was adequate. No abnormal lipid parameters. On examination best corrected visual acuity was 6/18 N8 in the right eye and 6/36 N12 in the left eye. Intra ocular pressure was normal with applanation

Recalcitrant cystoid macular oedema in an eye with ischaemic central retinal vein occlusion - what's next?

We report a case of a middle-aged gentleman with recalcitrant macular oedema (RMO) secondary to ischaemic central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO). He was given six injections of intravitreal ranibizumab (anti-VEGF) monthly. However, his visual acuity (VA) deteriorated and the macular oedema worsened. He then received an intravitreal dexamethasone implant eight months post-CRVO. His VA and macular...

Diode laser photocoagulation for diabetic macular oedema.

AIMS This study aimed to investigate whether diode laser irradiation, which is poorly absorbed by haemoglobin, can induce closure of leaking retinal microvascular lesions in the treatment of diabetic macular oedema. METHODS Thirty three eyes with clinically significant diabetic macular oedema were treated with a diode laser. Fundus evaluation before and after treatment included visual acuity,...

New technologies and drugs in the management of diabetic retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy remains one of the most common and most feared causes of blindness and visual impairment in adults of working age despite the availability of effective treatment for more than 30 years. Sight-threatening diabetic retinopathy consists of two distinct clinical entities: proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) and diabetic macular oedema (DMO or maculopathy) which may coexist...

Retinal vessel dilatation and elongation precedes diabetic macular oedema.

AIMS/BACKGROUND Retinal vessel dilatation is a well known phenomenon in diabetes. In this study, the theory of whether excessive changes in diameter and length of retinal vessels occur in the development of diabetic macular oedema was tested, supporting a hypothesis that the development of diabetic macular oedema may be linked to hydrostatic pressure changes described in Starling's law. METHO...

Management of diabetic retinopathy. An overview.

Diabetic retinopathy is a highly specific vascular complication of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus. It remains one of the commonest causes of visual loss in people of working age in developed countries.
